A key architect of Wonderla, Mr. Arun K. Chittilappilly Managing Director, Wonderla Holidays Pvt. Ltd., was actively involved in the strategy and planning of the Wonderla Park. Providing key support in brand management, marketing and public relations is Mr. Rudresh H. S., Deputy Manager, P.R.
Talking to Tourism India Magazine, Mr. Rudresh was eloquent about Wonder La’s USPs and its strict conformance to international standards. High on its USP list is the fact that reverse osmosis treated water is used in the park. “Continuous water treatment through the reverse osmosis process ensures that the water is contamination free. Water quality is monitored using a computerised monitoring system”, said Mr. Rudresh.
“At Wonder La, we try and maintain the highest safety standards. Every ride in the park undergoes daily safety check before being thrown open to the public. Every ride is shut down at least once a year, taken apart and all parts serviced. All high-thrill rides are imported and have safety harnesses attached to each seat and a unique double locking system. Our guest relations officers are equipped with two-way radios and are posted all over the park. Wonder La has trained lifeguards at each of all the water-based rides. The park has a top class facility for providing first-aid by trained personnel. An ambulance is available within the premises”, explained Mr. Rudresh.
The entire park is protected from lightning using tall arresters. Wonder La also uses a closed circuit surveillance system throughout the park.
The facilities and infrastructure at Wonder La include state of the art convention halls for the corporate events and parties, five multi-cuisine restaurants, 6.5 acres ample parking space inside the park, separate dress changing rooms and locker facility, prayer room and baby nursing rooms, driver’s restroom facility and free pick-up and drop facility from Mysore road to Wonder La.
Wonderla has always tried its best to retain and utilise natural resources to the optimum. The company has planted more than 2000 plants, and installed Roof Water Collection and Rain Water Harvesting Tanks for the collection of Rain Water.
Wonderla is also a socially responsible entity. Wonderla is engaged in various social activities in the surrounding villages, provides free health insurance and conducts medical camps in nearby villages. The management has also supported Akshara Balawadi Schemes and distributes free books, uniforms and furniture for schools in the area.
We asked Mr. Rudresh if he thought that the present state of the economy and the inflationary trends will have any effect on demand.
“The current state of the economy and the inflationary trends has only a limited effect on the tourism sector. The growth rate of increase in the footfall of foreign visitors to India and tremendous growth in domestic tourism over the few years boosted the amusement park industries. This has also resulted in the entry of new players in to this segment. According to Indian Association of Amusement Parks (IAAPI), Indian amusement park business is estimated at Rs. 4000 crores and it is expected to grow by 6 per cent annually till 2010,” he replied.
Mr. Rudresh however cautions that some checks are needed to maintain the flow of visitors to amusement parks in general. “The admission tariffs have to be maintained at low levels to bring the facility within the reach of the public. We work on very thin margins, which are stressed by entertainment taxes etc. The high entry taxes on out-station vehicles will affect tourist flow to our park, and the state” he says.
