A Time for Restraint

The fuel price hike is bound to have a widespread ripple effect on the tourism sector. Already, several airlines have announced fare hikes following the hike in aviation fuel price. With global oil prices spiralling, airlines have hiked fuel surcharge five times in the past five months. In fact, even PATA warns that global economies will be at risk if airlines are forced to cut operations considerably and terminate important routes due to the high fuel costs.

While the hotel industry is already reeling under the impact of overall inflation, the rise in LPG and diesel prices will worsen matter. In fact, only after the next season will we be able to assess the impact of these trends on the industry. Meanwhile, the industry will have to come up with cost-saving mechanism and alternative development models to ease the situation. The Government, on its part, could help by implementing tax exemption policies.

World Environment Day was celebrated with much gusto all over the globe, with nations pledging to Kick the CO2 Habit. Simple steps like planting trees, using recycled paper, opting for e-ticketing, conserving water and energy, reducing the use of fuel-empowered transport, etc. will go a long way in reducing the carbon footprint. Some of the world’s largest hotel chains are already talking recruiting customers in their attempts to recycle, reduce water usage and donate to sustainable tourism projects.

Aviation is one of the greatest contributors to global warming. So one can opt for shorter distances when deciding on a holiday and check out local destinations. In fact, with hundreds of fascinating and beautiful destinations, touring Incredible India rather than going abroad can be a realistic and carbon-reducing option. Hotels should think more about facilities for group travel and sightseeing.
